‘No Spend’ — What It Is & How I Do It

Some of you may have seen in my monthly tracker post and in my planner set-up video that I participated in a ‘no spend’ challenge. I know a lot of people are confused as to what it is and how it works, so I thought a quick post might clear things up. The basic premise is that you don’t spend money for a set amount of time (usually a month). It’s a great idea if you’re trying to save/get out of debt/curb your spending. Or if you’re a total control freak like me who just wants to know where all those… More ->

My Current Planner Set-Up (From The Gogglebox To Your Eyeballs)

IT’S HERE!   I finally bit the bullet and recorded a video for the site. I kept putting it off and putting it off (the reasons for which I’ve outlined in the video) but I decided I needed to start practicing what I preach and GET MY SHIT TOGETHER. So I did. And it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. (Isn’t that always the way?) Praise jebus for iMovie because I don’t know what I would’ve done without it. As it is, the editing is pretty minimal. But without iMovie, I dread to think how… More ->

February 2015 Wrap-Up

It’s been an odd month in the How To GYST household. It started off being quite productive, and with a new digital marketing strategy for the site. I was full of motivation and ideas on how to grow the brand, and I set about making various lists and scribbling random notes (as is my wont). And then I hit a personal set-back. Something that disrupted my normal day-to-day routine, and left me at a bit of a loss. I felt unmotivated and, as a result, I just let everything else slide in order to focus on myself and my family.… More ->

Basic Budgeting — The “How To GYST” Beginners Guide

Our topic for today is basic budgeting. I’ll preface it by saying that my husband and I are (thankfully) not struggling financially. Having said that, we’re not exactly minted either (so no need to send threatening letters or requests for donations). With that in mind, I hope everyone can benefit from what works for me. My husband tends to be a bit of a spendthrift so we’ll just go right ahead and ignore him. I, on the other hand, am much more frugally minded and can be a bit of a scrimper and saver, even when times aren’t tight.… More ->

Maintenance Now or Mayhem Later

The story As a landlady, there are few things I dread more than getting a text from a tenant. Invariably, it means something is broken or has otherwise gone wrong, and it’s going to take a pile of money or a good amount of time and petrol to sort it out. Or — horror of horrors — both. This time it was the vacuum cleaner, the washing machine, the tall lamp, and the TV’s cable connection. All were broken, according to various text messages. My bank balance was already weeping. Nonetheless, I told them I’d be over to investigate,… More ->
