Scout is 5!
I don't mind admitting that on Saturday night I had a little "moment" when I looked at the clock and realised that exactly 5 years previously, I'd just gone into labour with her.
I know everyone says the years fly by but, for me, those 5 years have felt like an eternity.
What I mean by that is that I'm not the same woman anymore. I'm living a completely different life now, in a completely different world. Back then, I was a lawyer, I lived in Ireland, and I had long hair!
Fast forward 5 years, I've had a complete change of career, I live in the United States, and I've chopped all my hair off. (Or, at least, a qualified stylist has.)
Oh, and I'm a mother.
In lieu of gushing about how great my daughter is (and she really, truly is), here's a little something I posted on social media to mark the occasion. Some of you may already have seen it, but I wanted to post it here for posterity.
An Open Love Letter To My One And Only
I met you for the first time five years ago. In some ways, nothing has changed; in others, nothing is the same.
Let me tell you one thing that will remain true: I will always choose you. I will love you and look after you and nourish you and protect you and teach you and fight for you.
I will kiss any sore knees and I will mend any broken hearts.
I will play games and read books and dance and sing for you. And with you.
Together, we will climb mountains and slay dragons and race unicorns.
And go for ice-cream afterwards.
Your happiness is my happiness. And through the decades ahead, through the rough and the smooth, you will be my one constant and I will be yours.
I gave birth to you, but you made me the woman I am today.
You can always count on me.
I will always choose you.
Happy birthday, my beautiful baby girl.
